"Sound Camera" software allows blind people to listen to the sound

Release date: 2012-11-23

According to a recent report by the New Scientist website, people born in the dark now no longer need to look at the world with their eyes. Emir Amadiyah of the Hebrew University of Israel and his colleagues have developed a new device. To enable congenital blind people to get visual information from their voices.
People can listen to the sounds that describe an object or facial expression and then say what they "see". This system can also be read by reading letters.
The micro camera is attached to the user's head at one end and to a computer or smartphone at one end. The recognition system converts the image into sound and provides a description of the object through the earphone. The sound, high or low, represents its surface shape, allowing people to characterize the image in their minds. It takes 70 hours to train a blind person to learn to describe a series of images.
By monitoring the nerve activity of the blind using the device, Amadiyah and his team found that although the user did not use the eyes, their visual cortex was activated by sound. This shows that although these blind people have never been exposed to normal visual information, special areas that are identified or read as targets can still be activated in the future.
Currently, the research team plans to improve the system by using music to represent color, shape and location. They want to present a more pleasing sound: because the experimental participants have become bored with the soundscape after a few hours of use.
