Hitachi Medical Systems demonstrated its newly developed positron emission tomography (PET) prototype using semiconductor detectors at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Nuclear Medicine Society in New Orleans, USA. According to reports, in brain imaging, this new detector can improve the image quality and spatial resolution.
According to Yuichi Morimoto, a senior researcher at the Hitachi Central Research Laboratory, research shows that semiconductor devices have high energy resolution and semiconductor detectors are smaller and thinner, making them easier to adjust and discharge than traditional systems. These features help to improve the image quality of PET. This semiconductor detector PET prototype also uses a deep code detection system to reduce edge field of view errors.
The prototype has been installed at Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo, Japan.
