German scientists use body temperature to power micro medical devices

Release date: 2007-08-14

German scientists use body temperature to generate electricity for micro medical devices. German scientists have successfully used the temperature difference between the body surface and the external environment to generate electricity, which provides a possibility for electronic devices to get rid of traditional power supply methods.
The person in charge of the project said that this method uses semiconductors to use the temperature difference to obtain electrical energy. The basic principle of thermoelectric power generation is the “Zebeek” effect, that is, when two different metals are connected to form a closed loop, if the temperature of the two connection points is different, a small voltage can be generated.
Since the temperature difference between the human body and the surrounding environment is usually limited, it can only produce a very low voltage of about 200 millivolts, which cannot drive ordinary electronic equipment. German scientists have invented a new way to solve this problem, allowing some electronic devices to operate under such low pressure conditions, but they did not disclose the details of this new method.
The new method can be used to power some micro-medical devices, such as sensors on seriously ill patients. —— Information from: Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
