Nursing of postpartum ewes and newborn lambs

The entire body of the ewe, especially the genital organs, undergoes drastic changes during the postpartum period, and the body's resistance is reduced. In order to restore the ewes as soon as possible, appropriate care should be given. About 1-1.5 liters of warm water was given to the ewes within one hour after giving birth. Within three days, feeds of good quality and digestibility were fed to reduce the amount of concentrate feed and gradually changed to feed normal feed. Pay attention to the ewe's lochia discharge. The lochia is usually discharged in 4-6 hours. Check the ewe's breast for abnormalities or lumpiness.

After the lamb is produced, the mucus in the mouth, nose, and ears is promptly pulled out to allow the ewes to add mucus to the lamb. If the lamb suffocates, lift the two hind limbs and make the head down, lightly row the chest wall or use a hose to blow the air into the trachea. When performing artificial respiration, place the lamb on its back and stretch the front and rear fore and aft, while gently pressing the two ribs and chest with the palm of your hand. Pay attention to the insulation of the lamb. Lambs born in cold areas or grazing areas should quickly dry the lambs' bodies and put them on the back of the lambs and place them in the mother-and-child pens. Help the lamb eat colostrum as soon as possible. The ewes produce a period of 4-7 days postpartum. Colostrum had the highest levels of fat and protein in the first day and fell sharply the next day. The colostrum has a high vitamin content, so it is vitamin A. Colostrum contains magnesium, potassium, sodium and other salts that are higher than those of conventional milk. Lambs have the effect of slowing down and passing through the fetus after eating. Colostulin contains high levels of immune substances. It can be seen that the nutritional value of colostrum is perfect, and it is easily absorbed and utilized by the lamb to enhance its resistance. If the newborn lamb is weak or unable to find a nipple, or if the ewes do not recognize the lamb, they should try to help the mother and the child to recognize each other and manually look for the nanny sheep. The sick lambs should be discovered and treated promptly and given special care.

For ewes and lambs within three days after birth, the mother and child should be placed in the mother and child pens of the lamb-raising room and be transferred to the outdoor mother-daughter circle three days later. When the climate is good, the lambs can be grazing. For frail and non-recognized sheep, extend the feeding time in the mother and child column until the lamb is healthy. For ease of management, the mother and child sheep can have the same temporary number on the same side of the mother and child.
