Can "anti-season vegetables" be eaten? Experts say no harm

In the view of traditional health experts, "seasonal vegetables" and "seasonal fruits" are not in harmony with the season and are harmful to the human body. Some “nutrition experts” believe that seasonal fruits and vegetables are always elicited through fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and so on. Not only do they have no nutritional value, it’s difficult to say whether they are safe or not.

The growth of plants requires proper lighting, air, water, temperature and fertilizer. Fertilizers can be natural ingredients in the soil and can also be applied manually. Seasons and "seasonal" are just a summary of how ancestors used natural conditions. Until now, the ability of mankind to manipulate these conditions has been greatly enhanced, so that it is not necessary to adapt to plants, but to let plants grow according to our needs.

Generally speaking, there are mainly three forms of "seasonal vegetables." The first is planting in different places. Plants are “seasonally” in one place, but they are in another place. For example, almost all vegetables in the winter in Beijing are "out of date", but in Guangdong Hainan is full of vitality. These vegetables are undoubtedly "seasonally" in their place of origin. To say that Beijing has violated Tianlun is very reluctant. The second is long-term preservation. The long-term preservation and preservation technology of fruits and vegetables is unprecedented. It is no longer a trick to eat fruits and vegetables that have been “seasoned” until the winter. Bananas, grapes, apples, pears, oranges, pineapples... Almost all of the common fruits can be preserved until the whole year. The third kind is "house cultivation." This man-made "local environment" is seen by people as "violent to nature," but it is still a royal land for plants.

Of course, whether it is planting long-distance transportation in different places, or preserving pre-preservation ripening for a long time, or planting greenhouses, it is not exactly the same as fruits and vegetables produced at the “local time”. This difference may lead to some differences in the "nutritional composition", and sometimes even the taste taste difference is quite obvious. However, these differences do not mean that they are "not nutritious" nor do they mean that they are "possibly harmful." A way of planting and preserving, as long as it can be scientifically recognized and promoted, means that "possible harm" is really minimal.

Obviously, there is nothing wrong with vegetables that are "in season" - at least, the price is cheaper than the off season. Compared with anti-season fruits and vegetables, it should not be "seasonal fruits and vegetables," but should be "no fruits and vegetables." In Beijing in the winter, it is meaningless to consider the anti-season green peppers to be worse than the “season” of a few months ago. What we need to think about is: Compared with the ancestors who eat and store Chinese cabbage and potatoes every day, are these “violating” vegetables more nutritious and delicious? Even in Hainan, Guangdong, the grape that eats off-season in the winter is far more nutritious than “without grapes”.
