Technical Measures for Making Silage from Apple Pomace

Selection of apple pomace The choice of apple pomace must be strictly in accordance with the requirements of silage raw materials, which is the key to the success or failure of silage. The apple dregs should be fresh and juicy, and it is best to use the fresh pomace produced by the fruit processing factory in the next day or two. The residue requirements are pollution-free and mildew-free. Any black, brown, or gray-white contaminated with harmful substances such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers will not be available. The fruit residue mixed with soil (stone) blocks, tiles, plastic film, etc. must be cleaned before being used.

The preliminary treatment of apple pomace The fresh apple pomace generally has a water content of more than 80%, which is higher than the suitable moisture content of the silage material of 60% to 70%. Therefore, it cannot be filled directly, and the moisture content needs to be lowered. Commonly used methods rely on self-weight or pressurized weight to squeeze out some of the moisture in the pomace. It is also possible to add a suitable amount of dry material to the fresh apple dregs to reduce the moisture content. The dry material can be used for wild hay, split into 3 cm long segments, and add 15-20 kg per 100 kg of apple dregs. You can also add appropriate amount of wheat bran, etc., in order to increase the nutritional value of apple dregs and reduce the moisture content.

Before filling the apple pomace raw material, a layer of quick lime is laid on the bottom of the pit and a layer of mat grass is laid on the ash. Then the treated apple dregs are layered layer by layer, each layer is 20 to 30 centimeters thick and is solid, and then loaded layer by layer, practical. Do not step on it after it is full so as not to affect the quality of the silage. Generally require 500 to 600 kg of apple dregs per cubic meter. When loading, the loading time should be reduced to 3 to 5 days as much as possible to facilitate the production of high-quality silage. When the raw materials are loaded to about 1 m above the cellar, the filling is stopped and capping is performed.

The cap is capped with 20 cm thick wet wheat straw or wet straw, and the grass is pressed with 30-50 cm thick soil. The surface of the soil layer should be compacted and beaten. The pit roof is raised to form a steamed head shape to facilitate drainage.

Manage the silo to prevent the inflow of rainwater and air, so as not to cause rot. After being buried, ditches should be dug around the silo. Also, check the sinking condition of the sinkhole frequently. If there is a crack in the pit, you should seal it with soil in time to prevent water and air. The apple pomace is converted into silage after 35 to 40 days of closed fermentation.

Quality Requirement High quality apple pomace silage should have acid and aroma, green or yellowish green, close texture and distinct layers, and can feed cattle, sheep and other livestock.
